George and Frazer undertook a trip to the wonderful West Coast (of Scotland) in 1999 and played golf at first Machrihanish Golf Club and then twice on successive days over The Machrie on Islay. After those matches it was decided that such matches deserved to be played for a Trophy and that one should be purchased. So it was, at Spean Bridge on the way home to Cawdor. The Trophy was named the Wilson Touring Trophy and has since been played for - and filled as required with The Royal Brackla.
Credit must go to Malcolm McKay - George's maternal Grandfather, Frazer's Great Grandfather and Sam's Great Great Grandfather for introducing golf to the family.
George writes in 2025 - My first memory of being on a golf course was with my Grampa at Irvine Ravenspark Golf Course when I was too young to walk round but Grampa carried me and put me down and picked me up between shots. Thereafter as I grew up he had the patience of a saint in allowing me to play with him and often his friend, Charlie Fearns, never complaining when I hit what were then precious golf balls, with big smiles on their faces (the covers on balls cut and split easily then) into unfindable places.
As a reminder of those days I still have the club - a Mashie - which I used to practise with in my Granny and Grampa's small back garden in Kilwinning - it would be appropriate if it is retained alongside the Wilson Touring Trophy. I suggest it is hereafter known as the McKay Mashie.
1st Amendment: Subsequent to the win for George at Sheringham an approach was made to the committee requesting a revision of the rules. Until then the Trophy could only be contested if the holder was present and playing. This had resulted in Frazer and Sam playing some highly competitive matches at some prestigious courses, including TPC Sawgrass and Yas Links, but limited to playing for the Wilson Conference Plate! After due consideration an agreement was reached and the rules as they now stand were introduced for subsequent matches.
2nd Amendment: Rule 5 was amended as a result of a committee decision in August 2026 to agree that the playing of the Trophy at the Old Course, St Andrews may be considered a Major.
